A Campaign to Recruit Gen Z Volunteer Firefighters with Jason Caughey

There’s a campaign going on that aims to give volunteer fire departments some tools to help recruit new members.

It’s called “A Hustle Worth Having” and it’s aimed at Gen Z-aged community members. For those unfamiliar with the term’s definition, it’s roughly those born between 1997 and 2012, or 14 to 29 years old.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs is behind the campaign and has made all the campaign assets available at no cost to any fire department that wants to use them.

My guest is Jason Caughey, the Fire Chief of the Laramie County Fire Authority in Wyoming and an IAFC board member.

Notes:

Departments do not need to be IAFC members to use the campaign and its toolkit — it’s available to anyone.

Departments do not need a communications team or an advertising budget to participate. A free national toolkit with customizable assets is available at HustleWorthHaving.org, including:

  • Social media content
  • Flyers and posters
  • Postcards and business cards
  • Yard signs and banners
  • Video and photo assets
  • Guidance for printing and local implementation

Departments can use just one asset, launch a full local campaign, or incorporate the messaging into recruitment efforts they’re already running. IAFC is also creating specific content in connection with National Fire Prevention Week that departments can utilize.
